The Holy Spirit || Part 10, Day 5

I Corinthians‬ 12‬:1‬-11‬ NKJV‬‬‬‬

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

1. The gift of tongues

These are the tongues that have to be interpreted.

This tongue is when someone stands up in the church and everything stops and they begin to speak in tongues. This tongue must be interpreted or the Bible says it is out of order. God is so serious about this that the Bible says if there is no one to interpret that you are to hold the gift and keep silent in the church and let him speak to himself and to God.

When to give a message in tongues? First and foremost, this gift is to be used when you feel the unction of the Holy Spirit. You are not used in this gift whenever you get ready. It is when the unction of the Holy Spirit comes upon you. I can speak in my prayer language, the tongues that are my prayer language anytime I want. I can be going down the road praying and speaking in tongues. But when it comes to the gift of tongues I am yielding to an unction of the Holy Spirit.

After you sense that unction of the Holy Spirit then you wait for a time in the service for the gift to operate. These times are what I like to call a holy hush. This is what happens sometimes in our worship where everything gets quiet not because someone told everyone to get quiet, but it was orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. Or it may be a time right after worship. Or it may be a time right at the end of preaching before the altar call. But if the Holy Spirit has given you an unction to use the gift of tongues, then He also will give a place for the tongues to be used.

Or you can do like some of our dear brothers and sisters here, they come up to leadership and say I have a message in tongues let me know when you want me to release it. Led by the Holy Spirit we give a moment for the gift to be used. Either way it should be done decently and in order. In other words, you shouldn't be overpowering anyone or anything in the service.

If you are praying or worshiping in tongues then and things get quiet you should also quiet down so that the church doesn't think you are being used in the gift of tongues. Now if you sense you have an unction to be used in the gift of tongues, then you are to release that tongue at that moment.

Now let me say this, people can be filled with Holy Spirit and even have powerful manifestations of the Spirit while the preaching is happening. We know this because of what happened in Acts 10. But if you feel you have the gift of tongues during the preaching you should wait until the preaching is done or come to the leadership and tell us and we will give time for it in the service.

How do I know when God wants to use me in the gift of tongues? Many times, this unction will be like a bubbling inside of you, a spiritual bubbling on the inside of you that you feel like you can't contain. Many times this is the Holy Spirit unctioning you to give a word in tongues.

Remember it takes faith to operate in any of the gifts.

2. Interpretation of tongues

Now the gift of interpretation and the gift of tongues are two gifts that work with one another. And many times, the people who have the gift of tongues also have the gift of interpretation. Not always, but many times they do.

I've had people come up to me many times and say why is such-and-such the one always giving a word in tongues? Or why is so-and-so always giving the interpretation? That is a very easy answer, they are the ones that are most comfortable being used in that gift. I believe God can use anyone that is baptized in the Holy Ghost in any gift. But there are certain gifts that we are more comfortable flowing in.

The Bible says that in order for the gift of tongues to edify the church it must be interpreted. The Bible says that he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who interprets edifies the church. Thank God we have many in this church who allow the Spirit to use them in this gift. We have some who have the interpretation every time, but they try and give way to others to be used as well. When there is a tongue in the church most of the time the Holy Spirit has told me who has the interpretation before they begin to speak.

How do I know when I have the interpretation? It is much like the gift of tongues you will feel a powerful unctioning from the Spirit. Now when you sense this unctioning begin to listen to the voice of the Spirit inside of you. And almost every time, He will give you a sentence. Most of the time that's all you will get until you begin to release it. After you begin to release that, He starts giving more. Why does the Holy Spirit do it that way? Because it takes faith to operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit!

3. The gift of Prophecy

The gift of prophecy is a powerful gift in the Kingdom of God. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 14:3 that he who prophesies speaks edification, exhortation, and comfort to men.

Prophecy edifies. It builds up the church. When the gift of prophecy is released in the church and it is done in order and right, it ignites the place.

The gift of prophecy does not only edify, but it exhorts. In other words, God sends a gift of prophecy to the church to tell it to get to moving. It's time to get busy or it's time to start something. When it says exhorts, it is basically saying get to moving!

The gift of prophecy also brings comfort to men. This does not mean that every word of prophecy is given to make you feel all cozy inside. Or to make you feel good inside. It means that God uses this gift to let the church know that He is still in control and is working on its behalf. Trust me church, there have been times where we were facing things as a leadership and didn't know what to do and someone gave a word of prophecy in the house and it brought great comfort to this leadership.

This is how God intended on His gifts building up the church!

Let’s pray together…
